Magic Sounds: Cigna Healthcare and Magic Johnson collaborate to boost mental health through sounds and music

Listen to the album "Magic Sounds" available now on all streaming platforms.

A growing body of research supports the notion that music and sounds can impact our mental and emotional well-being.

That’s the premise of a new campaign by Cigna Healthcare in partnership with basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson. The initiative centers on a digital album of therapeutic tracks, created by Cigna Healthcare, ranging from rainforest ambience and ocean waves to basketball sounds designed to trigger an autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR).

“Scientific research has demonstrated that a variety of sounds and music can activate brain areas associated with memory, emotion, and attention, which can boost mood, promote relaxation, and enhance emotional regulation,” said Dr. Stuart Lustig, the national medical executive for behavioral health at Evernorth, a division of The Cigna Group.

The science behind sound, music and mental health

Studies from Johns Hopkins University and the American Psychiatric Association indicate that listening to music or soothing sounds can significantly reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety, especially in workplace settings. Music therapy has also been shown to help with anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and even substance use cravings. Techniques like binaural beats and ASMR have demonstrated benefits for relaxation, focus, and sleep quality.

To ensure each track in the Magic Sounds album delivers meaningful mental health benefits, Cigna Healthcare collaborated with clinical experts and music therapists to establish precise musical requirements for every composition. Drawing on peer-reviewed research, the team selected elements such as tempo, frequency, and instrumentation to target specific mental and emotional needs. For example, tracks designed to ease anxiety and sharpen focus feature slow, non-lyrical instrumentals and gentle birdsongs, while those intended for stress relief and sleep incorporate ambient soundscapes, binaural beats, and soothing nature sounds.

The album also leverages ASMR techniques, using proven auditory triggers and frequencies associated with relaxation, deep sleep, and improved mood. This evidence-based approach ensures that each track is not only enjoyable, but also scientifically crafted to support listeners’ well-being.

The full Magic Sounds album of six distinct tracks (available today), reflects different sounds and musical structures that target specific mental health needs, from stress recovery to cognitive performance.

“Music has always been a source of motivation and healing for me, both on and off the court,” said Johnson. “I’m proud to partner with Cigna Healthcare to bring Magic Sounds to life and help people find new ways to care for their mental and emotional health.”

The album is offered free of charge to anyone seeking proactive, accessible ways to support mental health. “Our hope is that this album helps people develop better mental health habits and routines, with the ultimate goal of preventing everyday struggles from becoming bigger clinical problems,” Dr. Lustig said.
