Cigna Earns Top Honors for LGBTQ Equality
By

Cigna earned a score of 100 percent on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s (HRC) 2021 Corporate Equality Index™ (CEI), making it one of the Best Places to Work for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Equality.[i] This is the ninth year in a row that Cigna has earned this honor, reflecting the company’s strong commitment to a diverse and inclusive workplace for all.

“At Cigna, we are proud of the actions we take to create an inclusive, equitable and diverse workplace, because we are most successful when we value and support each other’s unique differences,” said Susan Stith, vice president, diversity, equity, inclusion, civic affairs and the Cigna Foundation. “When it comes to ensuring health care is equal and accessible to all, we know that work starts by the way we interact with our colleagues. By celebrating everyone’s contributions and cultivating a sense of belonging, we’re able to bring our best selves to the customers and communities we serve.”

“From the previously unimaginable impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, to a long overdue reckoning with racial injustice, 2020 was an unprecedented year. Yet, many businesses across the nation stepped up and continued to prioritize and champion LGBTQ equality,” said Alphonso David, Human Rights Campaign® president. “This year has shown us that tools like the CEI are crucial in the work to increase equity and inclusion in the workplace, but also that companies must breathe life into these policies and practices in real and tangible ways.”

The 2021 CEI report is the premier benchmarking survey and report measuring corporate policies and practices pertinent to LGBTQ employees in the United States. The CEI evaluates LGBTQ-related policies and practices, including non-discrimination workplace protections, domestic partner benefits, transgender-inclusive health care benefits, competency programs and public engagement with the LGBTQ community.

Cigna celebrates what makes us unique, and remains committed to taking action to showcase our values and inclusive culture in visible, meaningful ways, both within our workforce and for those we serve. These actions include:

  • Our steadfast commitment to equal health care rights for all, regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, age or disability.
  • Being a proud signatory of CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion™ the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advance diversity and inclusion within the workplace.
  • Cigna’s Pride Enterprise Resource Group partnered with Cigna’s Health Equity Council to design a transgender inclusion awareness training for our employees, allowing them to serve transgender customers in a more culturally sensitive manner. The Pride ERG also promotes education, advocacy and support for the LGBTQ community and allies inside and outside of Cigna.
