Honoring Health Care’s Heroes: Cigna Doctors Share What’s Most Rewarding About Their Jobs

Being a doctor is both one of the most challenging and rewarding professions out there.

Doctors must deal with long hours, burnout, and, according to research in the National Library of Medicine, high levels of stress in their day-to-day work. “By virtue of their work they are exposed to a plethora of emotions, including a need to rescue the patient, a sense of failure and frustration when the patient's illness progresses, feelings of powerlessness against illness and its associated losses, [and more],” the research says.

They give it their all each and every day to improve patient lives, sometimes even sacrificing their own health and safety. At Cigna, health care heroes like doctors hold a very special place in all of our hearts. We admire their tenacity, commitment to health and well-being, and the selflessness they have shown – particularly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. And we recognize the profound impact they have on our company and society as a whole.

To celebrate National Doctor’s Day, we’ve reached out to just some of the MDs working at Cigna and asked them to share what they find most rewarding in their work. They come from all different backgrounds and walks of life, and specialize in different aspects of health. The one thing they all have in common is their fierce commitment to patients.

Christine Gilroy, MD, MSPH, Chief Medical Officer, Express Scripts PBM, an Evernorth company

The most rewarding part of being a doctor is the ability to advocate for patients. In my early clinical practice, I worked one-on-one with the most vulnerable in our society, which ultimately motivated me to look for ways to extend this advocacy beyond the individual. Today, I have the privilege of working to improve health care access and affordability for more than 100 million patients Express Scripts serves every day.

Dr. Sudha Kamineni, Supervising Physician Director, Cigna Medical Group

Caring for three generations of patients for past 23 years, and being responsible for their health and well-being, brings me immense joy and satisfaction. When patients share their family stories with me, show me pictures of their grandchildren, and make me part of their family story, I feel extremely happy and fulfilled.

Renee McLaughlin, MD FACS, National Medical Director, Value-Based Relationships, Cigna

The most rewarding part of being a doctor is taking a journey with another human being in which fear, pain, and despair are replaced by comfort, hope, and peace. People place enormous trust and faith in their doctors, and it is an incredible honor – yet incredibly humbling – to be able to serve someone in their time of need.

Dr. Vontrelle Roundtree, Family Physician and Lead Medical Director for MDLIVE, an Evernorth company

I have found great joy and energy in the opportunity to build strong relationships with my patients. I am a family physician so those relationships can span a lifetime, and they become even more important when someone is facing a difficult diagnosis. I find it particularly rewarding to be in a position to inspire and encourage patients during what can be some of the most trying and frightening times in their lives and to celebrate with them when the news is good.

Nicole Saint Clair, MD, FACOG, Medical Principal for Total Health & Wellness at Cigna HealthCare

Becoming a physician was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, but the most rewarding part is knowing that my work today has directly contributed towards making someone else healthier. Providing education and seeking to remove barriers and improve care delivery are ways to reduce the burden of chronic illness for our patients. It’s a great privilege to be in a role that allows me to have such a positive impact on so many people's lives.

Joseph B. Sobel, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Medicare, at Cigna

Early in my career as an emergency medicine physician, I was drawn to helping people in vulnerable populations, including seniors. I became passionate about removing the barriers to access that many people face, and helping to improve the quality of their daily lives. For seniors, this is especially important in order for them to maintain their independence. This is something that I get to help with through my work at Cigna, and treating our Medicare customers like our own parents and grandparents is personally rewarding for me.
