Forty-Nine Locations Added in the Past Year
BLOOMFIELD, Conn., June 23, 2008 - Cigna HealthCare announced the addition of more than 49 urgent care facilities to its network in Florida, making it easier for customers with after hours non-emergency needs to get the care they require. The addition of these new in-network facilities expands the number of urgent care centers available to Cigna HealthCare members in Florida by more than 46 percent from last year.
Urgent care facilities play a unique role in the Cigna provider network as they can ensure that members and covered dependents can get immediate treatment for the flu, a sprained ankle, a child with a temperature, or other similar conditions after hours or on weekends when their primary care physician may not be available. The facilities are staffed with licensed doctors and have extended hours, including nights and weekends.
“Often minor illnesses or a sports injury occur at night or on a weekend when a member's physician may not be available," said Dr. Michael Baxley, Cigna HealthCare medical director for the Florida market. “Urgent care clinics offer our members easy access to a physician to assess and treat the condition right away, rather than spending hours waiting to see a physician in an emergency room setting. In addition to helping our members get prompt care for their health needs, the use of urgent care centers helps keep emergency rooms open for those who have a trauma or life threatening condition."
There are 182 urgent care locations that are covered by Cigna HealthCare in Florida, with an additional 15 urgent care clinics presently in the credentialing process. Information on Cigna HealthCare-covered clinics is available at www.cigna.com.
