Cigna HealthCare of South Carolina, Inc. has been awarded statewide, Excellent Accreditation Status by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), the nation's leading independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to assessing, measuring and reporting on the quality of managed care plans. The Excellent NCQA Accreditation is valid statewide for Cigna HealthCare of South Carolina's HMO and POS products in Charleston, Columbia, Spartanburg, Greenville and surrounding areas.
Cigna HealthCare of South Carolina achieved Excellent NCQA Accreditation for service and clinical quality that met or exceeded NCQA's rigorous requirements for consumer protection and quality improvement. This accreditation was also based on Cigna HealthCare of South Carolina's HEDIS(R) (Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set) - performance measures that address key areas of service such as quality of care, access to care and member satisfaction with the health plan and physicians. NCQA Accreditation provides purchasers and consumers with an ability to evaluate the quality of different health plans along a variety of important dimensions, and to make their health plan decisions based on demonstrated value rather than simply on cost.
"We are very proud to receive statewide, Excellent Accreditation status from the NCQA," says James Koren, M.D., chief medical officer, Cigna HealthCare of South Carolina. "NCQA Accreditation is the standard against which we can measure our performance in the delivery of quality care as one of South Carolina's leading health plans."
"NCQA has recognized our total quality management efforts in every market we serve," Dr. Koren continued. "This achievement confirms that Cigna HealthCare of South Carolina customers and participants have access to quality, affordable health care and service as measured against independent criteria and established national standards."
HEDIS(R) is a registered trademark of the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).
Achieving Excellent NCQA Accreditation status is no easy accomplishment. The review is a rigorous on-site and off-site evaluation conducted by a team of managed care experts including physicians. Over 60 quality standards, covering the categories of Access and Service, Quality Providers, Staying Healthy, Getting Better, and Living with Illness, are measured during the voluntary evaluation process. One hundred percent of Cigna HealthCare plans across the country have been reviewed by the NCQA (as of September 1, 2001).
