New Song, Fun Puzzles Urge Kids to “Brush Your Teeth”

CIGNA's Online Dental Health Toolkit Has Been Enhanced in time for
February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month

BLOOMFIELD, Conn., February 01, 2010 - A catchy new song by singing doctor DocRock, a dental Sudoku puzzle, and other fun activities are some of the new additions to CIGNA's Online Dental Health Toolkit. It is designed to educate parents and children about the importance of oral health. The toolkit updates coincide with the American Dental Association’s National Children’s Dental Health Month in February.

In addition to the “Dental Sudoku” puzzle for children ages 10 to 14, CIGNA’s online dental health toolkit includes:

  • A daily dental tracker that kids can use to log how often they brush
  • Coloring pages with fun dental images for younger kids
  • The CIGNA’s cavity risk assessment tool helps people identify factors that could increase their risk for cavities
  • An audio podcast that offers ways parents can jumpstart positive dental habits in kids at an early age

“Any way we can make learning about oral care fun, interesting and engaging for kids is a step toward healthier smiles,” said Dr. Miles Hall, chief dental clinical director for CIGNA. “Games, coloring pages, and songs can get the message across in a way that resonates better with younger children. But pre-teens and teenagers are not too old to be reminded about the importance of good oral health either. Our online toolkit also has information for them as well.”

DocRock, a.k.a. Dr. Mache Seibel, came up with “Brush Your Teeth” as part of his HealthRock program (www.healthrock.com) that uses music and games to teach children healthy behaviors. Dr. Seibel is a board-certified physician who teaches at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

“If you can sing about a health issue, you can talk about it, and talking about it helps change behavior. Getting kids to sing about brushing their teeth helps them remember to do it. The length of the song is just about the right amount of time for kids to brush their teeth, so parents can download the song and kids can listen to it while brushing,” Dr. Seibel said.
