CIGNA Shows It’s Easy to Be Green, Earth Day and Every Day

PHILADELPHIA, April 22, 2009 - CIGNA is showing communities, employers and its employees how easy it is to be green this Earth Day, beginning with its work with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant 8,350 trees around the country at CIGNA offices and nearby wooded areas.

CIGNA's commitment to a sustainable environment, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility program, extends to customers as well with a green webinar held this week for interested employers. The course, “It’s Easy Being Green – Little Steps, Big Impact,” discussed how seemingly small steps make a difference to the environment now and in the future.

“Being green does not happen overnight, but we can all get there one step at a time,” said Bryan Peters, one of CIGNA's operations directors. “Living green is as simple as making little changes such as using energy efficient light bulbs, recycling soda cans and bottles, and choosing to walk instead of drive when possible. These steps can go a long way.”

Earlier this year, Uptime Institute named CIGNA as one of the Global Green 100 for Corporate Leadership in Information Technology. Below are some of the additional steps CIGNA is taking today and every day to help protect the planet and the people on it:

  • In its Philadelphia headquarters and Bloomfield, Conn. office, CIGNA is hosting an interactive Expo today with 30 other environmentally conscious companies featuring exhibits where people can recycle old cell phones and sneakers, learn how to compost, explore ways to green their transportation, calculate their personal carbon footprint and more.
  • CIGNA recycled 19,220 computer units in 2008 and re-marketed another 10,000, with none sent to a landfill.
  • The cafeteria in Bloomfield, Conn. arranged for Connecticut Bio-Fuels to collect cooking grease, which will be turned into fuel, and is beginning a vegetable and fruit waste collection process for use in composting by a local non-for-profit organization.
  • CIGNA's Home Delivery Pharmacy incorporated the Food and Drug Administration’s medicine disposal guidelines into written policy to provide customers with the proper, environmentally-friendly methods of prescription drug disposal.
  • In Plantation, Fla., old carpet squares from the office were donated to a local high school to insulate a room for better band acoustics.
  • The Visalia, Calif. office collected and donated prom dresses, jewelry and shoes to The Soroptimist International, which makes these items available to underprivileged high school girls preparing for the prom.
  • Four million pounds of paper are shredded and recycled annually.
  • Twenty million electronic transactions a year save millions of reams of paper.
