Denver – May 9, 2012 – On Thursday, Cigna (NYSE:CI) employee volunteers will spend the day as teachers at the Northeast Academy in Denver as part of the Junior Achievement “JA In a Day” program. Students from kindergarten through eighth grade will learn about the basics of personal finance and about the fundamental connection between school and success from the 25 Cigna volunteers.
According to Junior Achievement, nearly half of high school students in Denver Public Schools fail to graduate and 81% of dropouts said they saw no relevance between completing high school to getting a job later in life. Through the curriculum taught by Junior Achievement, children learn the importance of knowing how to manage finances and prepare themselves to embrace free enterprise and succeed in a global economy.
“Cigna has partnered with Junior Achievement on a number of events for the past few years. We really believe in the importance of their mission, and this event is a great opportunity to make a powerful impact in the community,” said Joel Graham Cigna client engagement manager, who is spearheading the Cigna volunteer effort.
Junior Achievement is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through hands-on programs. Junior Achievement’s unique approach allows volunteers from the community to deliver the curriculum while sharing their experiences with students.
In addition to Cigna's participation in the “JA In a Day” program, Cigna has also sponsored the Junior Achievement Bowl-A-Thon that helps JA raise money to educate K-12 students about the fundamentals of our economic system and is a sponsor of the Junior Achievement Finance Park, a month-long economics education program that introduces personal financial planning and career exploration.
