BLOOMFIELD, Conn., June 8, 2012 –
To Fernando Morales, founder and president of the West Hartford Magic AAU Basketball
program, his role is more about teaching his players the importance of integrity and responsibility than it is about the fundamentals of basketball. But creating that environment of a structured sports program without boundaries like economics, race, skill level or gender requires outside support from players’ families and the community. Cigna's Individual and Family Plan
segment is pleased to be the first Platinum level sponsor of the West Hartford Magic with a donation of $5,000.
“This is huge for us—it’s like a dream come true. This Cigna sponsorship will help us pay for program expenses like renting gyms and attending tournaments all over the Northeast. But it will also help us assist families who might not be able to handle the $975 program fee. We don’t want to turn anyone away. My requirements are that the kids work hard in school and work hard on the court; in that order. I don’t want any other boundaries to get in the way. This funding from Cigna will help make that possible,” explained Morales.
“We’re happy to support the AAU-West Hartford Magic to further their focus in teaching the fundamentals of accountability, teamwork and physical activity in creating healthy habits for the future,” said Ray Smithberger, chief operating officer of Cigna's Individual and Family Plans.
This weekend, June 9-10, marks the West Hartford Magic Summer Jam Tournament. Games will be played throughout the weekend at Northwest Catholic High School in West Hartford and Hartford High School. Spectators are welcome. Admission is $6 and goes to offset the costs of the tournament. Details on times and locations of all Summer Jam Tournament games can be found on the program’s website
. The West Hartford Magic will also be offering a summer camp in West Hartford, Aug. 13-17, for boys and girls in grades three through eight.
